A flight packing list has an obvious shape: a carry-on, a destination, maybe a few climate-specific swaps. A road trip is a different kind of dressing problem, because the outfit is not a transition from here to there, it is the whole several hours in between. You are sitting in it, reclining in it, getting out to pump gas in it, and walking into wherever you land still wearing most of it. None of that calls for a true travel wardrobe. It calls for a handful of pieces that hold up to a long stretch in one seat without looking like you just woke up from a nap in them.
The waistband is where most road trip outfits actually fail. Stiff denim or a structured trouser that looks sharp standing up turns uncomfortable fast once you have been sitting for two hours, and nobody wants to unbutton anything at a rest stop. The West Jogger solves that without reading as loungewear. It is a barrel-leg pant with a pull-on elastic waistband and front pleats, cut from 100% cotton so it tapers in at the ankle instead of pooling, and it looks finished enough to walk straight into dinner once you arrive. We wrote more about why that silhouette has become one of fall's steadier shapes in our original West Jogger piece, and it earns its keep just as much on a long car ride as it does at home.
Temperature is the other variable a road trip throws at you that a flight mostly does not. The car runs warm with the heat on, the gas station parking lot is colder than it looks, and whatever town you stop in for lunch can be fifteen degrees off from where you started. A half-zip knit earns its place here for exactly that reason. The Stasia Quarter Zip is a relaxed, textured knit with a mock half-zip neckline and whipstitch trim along the yoke and sleeves, so it reads a little more considered than a plain pullover but still zips open the moment the car gets too warm. It is the kind of piece you can leave half-zipped for three hours and never think about again.
For the actual getting in and out of the car part, a vest beats a jacket. A real coat gets bunched up against a seatbelt and has to come fully off every time the car warms up, while a sleeveless layer goes on and off in a second and never fights with the shoulder strap. The Sierra Sweater Vest in Sapphire Blue is a chunky rib knit with a metallic-trimmed V-neck and a cropped, relaxed fit, warm enough to wear alone at a gas station stop and easy to pull on over the Stasia knit once the sun starts going down. We featured the same construction, in Black, when it first launched this season, and the blue works just as hard here against the Oatmeal and Black of the other two pieces.
None of this requires overthinking what the drive is actually for. It works whether you are heading a few hours upstate to see family for the weekend, picking a friend up partway between two cities, or making the longer haul to a rental house with a full trunk and a cooler in the back. Slip-on shoes help more than almost anything with laces, and it is worth keeping anything genuinely delicate, silk, chiffon, anything that wrinkles from hours of sitting, packed away for whenever you arrive rather than on your body for the drive itself.
Comfort over a long stretch has always been part of how ELAN approaches getting dressed, not just for a beach day but for the actual logistics of getting somewhere. We have written before about building a fall capsule around a handful of pieces that do real work, and the same logic applies to a weekend trip by car just as much as one by plane. It is a brand that has been thinking about travel since it started in Miami in 1991, even when the destination this time is just a few hours up the highway.
