There is a particular kind of pressure that comes with a first date outfit. You want to look like yourself on a good day, not like someone auditioning for the role of your own life. And the venue rarely helps: a first date might mean fifteen minutes over coffee that could end early, or it might turn into two hours over dinner because neither of you noticed the time. Building the outfit around one piece that can move between those two registers takes most of the guesswork out of it.
That is the case for the Claire Top, ELAN's new peasant-style blouse for fall, in a soft, fluid chiffon with real drape and a faint sheen. It comes in a blended, abstract print ELAN calls Brown Lia, done in muted taupe, camel, and charcoal, closer to a tortoiseshell wash than a bold animal print. Delicate ruching runs down the front placket, ruffle trim traces the shoulders and the stand collar, and the neckline ties at the throat, so it can be cinched closed for something a little more polished or left open for a soft, subtle keyhole. It is one blouse doing the work of two, which is exactly the point on a night where you do not know yet which version of the evening you are going to get.
For a first date that is really a trial run, coffee in the middle of the day, a walk after, nowhere fancy to be, tuck the Claire Top loosely into the Juniper Jean, ELAN's high-rise, wide-leg style in a dark indigo wash with a raw, frayed hem. Leave the blouse's neckline untied and let the ruffle collar do its own thing. It reads unbothered in the best way, like you left the house without overthinking it, even though the blouse and the denim were both chosen on purpose. We wrote about this same wide-leg silhouette in more detail in How to Style Wide-Leg Jeans This Fall, if the raw hem and high rise are new territory.
If it turns out to be the kind of date that starts with a dinner reservation instead, or the coffee date that is going so well it becomes dinner, swap the jeans for the Fleet Pant in a warm taupe grey. It has the same wide-leg ease as the jeans but in a soft, brushed fabrication with more drape, an adjustable drawstring waist standing in for a proper waistband. Tie the Claire Top's neckline closed this time, tuck it in, and the whole outfit tips from daytime-easy to evening-finished without changing a single piece. It is a similar idea to the tailored-versus-denim tradeoff we explored in Why Trousers Are Stealing the Spotlight From Jeans This Fall, just recast for a date instead of a workday.
ELAN has been making the case for comfortable, contemporary women's clothing since the brand started in Miami in 1991, and a blouse that can be tied one way for polish and left open the other way for ease is very much in that tradition. It is a different kind of versatility than the one we wrote about in The One Blouse That Works for the Office and the Weekend, that one earned its keep in a relaxed poplin built for Monday meetings and Saturday errands, this one is built for the specific, slightly nervous math of a first date. Between the two, ELAN's tops range has room for both the tailored and the romantic, and the bottoms to go with either mood are already in the closet.
